Amid escalating pressure from the BJP on the West Bengal government regarding the recent rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, Governor C V Ananda Bose met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday to discuss the situation.
The incident has sparked widespread protests across the state, with the BJP leading the charge, demanding immediate and stringent action against the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. Despite the mounting pressure, sources indicate that the Centre is treading cautiously, carefully considering its options before taking any decisive steps.
A highly placed source within the BJP mentioned that while the party is maintaining the political momentum with daily protests across West Bengal, there is currently "no definite plan yet nor clarity" on the next steps. The Centre is mindful of not overstepping the federal boundaries, particularly as it relies on regional allies for broader political support.
Governor Bose, during his meeting with Shah, reportedly updated the Union Home Minister on the situation in West Bengal without advocating for any specific action. Bose was also scheduled to meet Union Health Minister J P Nadda to discuss concerns raised by protesting junior doctors in the state. However, this meeting was canceled following the Supreme Court's decision to establish a National Task Force to improve the safety, working conditions, and well-being of medical professionals.
The BJP’s state unit remains adamant in its demand for decisive action against the TMC government. A party leader stated, "The entire state has turned against Mamata Banerjee and her party. Even her allies, like the Congress, have expressed disapproval of the administration in West Bengal."
